*Edited to add information about the subwoofer output.

**Upgraded rating from 4 to 5 Stars. Explanation at end.

This appears to be a slightly updated version of the popular and widely reviewed R1280t speaker. There are hundreds of reviews, both professional and customer, of this speaker on Internet, so I won''t rehash them.

The primary differences: (1) the addition of a subwoofer connection, with associated circuitry to provide an electronic crossover* when a sub is connected, and (2) addition of a signal-processing feature to create a wider stereo image, and modification of the remote control to add a switch for that feature.

I cannot categorically state that the "R1280ts" version sounds identical to the earlier version. The dimensions, driver complement, and design appear to be the same. Specifications also seem to be the same. All indications are that it’s the same acoustically as other “1280” models.

Most of the reviews you''ll see will conclude with some version of "for the money..." And that''s the right way to look at these speakers. They are not the finest powered bookshelf speakers in the land. Not the loudest. Not the bassiest. Not the most extended highs, not the most neutral-sounding. But -- for the money -- they offer more than you might expect. They sound good if you don''t turn them up too loud, if you sit reasonably close and don''t try to fill the room with sound. They make great computer speakers that will let you hear music without giving up too much bass, or listen to podcasts or news with clarity.

**My critique of the sound is that they have a very slightly boxy quality, a lack of the transparency that, to be fair, is usually the hallmark of much more expensive speakers. But at the same time aren''t boomy, muffled, harsh, or any of the other flaws that plague most inexpensive speakers. For the money, I believe they offer great bang-for-the-buck.

I plan to add a small powered subwoofer soon. If that changes anything about how these speakers sound beyond the obvious, I''ll amend this review.

*I did add a sub - a Monoprice SSW-8, a "slim" sub with the conventional connections and controls for a home theater sub. I connected the Edifier sub out to the sub''s line inputs (requiring a 3.5mm-to-RCA adapter cable; you could use the one that comes with the speakers if you didn''t use it already). This setup works well. Extending the bass another octave or more definitely enriches the sound without changing the character of the speakers. It''s by no means a necessary or transformative upgrade, but it''s worthwhile.

*(cont''d) The Edifier sub-out is basically a headphone jack. It is full-range; there is no "crossover." It is affected by all of the controls -- bass, treble, volume -- and, surprisingly, also by the "spacializer." I don''t recommend using the spacializer when using a subwoofer.

(Using this jack for headphones does not, of course, cut off the speaker sound. There is also something slightly "off" about the full-range sound coming from this port; it seems to lack full separation, and seems somewhat shrill. But it works for the subwoofer just fine.)

Because the Edifers lack any way to control the sub out, you will need a sub with volume and crossover-frequency controls, and you probably want to place the sub where those controls remain accessible. I''m using a crossover frequency of about 100Hz, and of course set the volume by ear.

Certainly the addition of the sub output at no increase in price is a worthwhile upgrade. It does what it needs to do, and no more. It would have been good to include a low-pass filter, but it''s not generally needed.

**These speakers seem to benefit very much from extended break-in. After about 50 hours use, the "boxy" quality referred to in the main text has largely disappeared, leaving the sound more natural than it once was. The high end is still just adequate, but overall the sound is acceptably neutral and uncolored, especially for a speaker in this price range. It wouldn''t be 5 stars compared to the best bookshelf speakers available, but it doesn''t deserve a demerit when compared to its direct competitors.

I bought these to replace my Edifier r1700 set that was transferred from my PC desk to the TV. I didn''t want to write a review comparing the 2 sets but I think it''s something people are interested in hearing about considering the $50 price difference between the 2 sets. So here it goes.

Build quality: honestly they''re about the same. Both sets are solid speakers. The controls on the 1280''s seem to be a little cheaper feeling and not as appealing.

Aesthetics: this has to go to the 1700''s. The paper driver cones on the 1280''s are not as attractive as the drivers on the 1700''s. The same goes for the tweeters - the 1280''s just aren''t as attractive. If you prefer to leave the covers on, which I don''t know why you would, then I wouldn''t see much difference between them.

Sound: here''s what I''m here for. I will admit that the 1280''s are somewhat more crisp and maybe a little less boomy. But, you can tell the sound coming out of the 1700''s is more balanced, or at least what I consider balanced (I do like mid-heavy speakers historically). It just depends on your music taste. The 1280''s really struggle with heavy rock but shine with crisp, lighter music like soft rock and bluegrass/country/americana. The 1700''s shine when playing heavier music like hard rock but handle the other stuff pretty well. I prefer to listen to the 1700 set.

Final thoughts: In my opinion, you get what you pay for with these speakers. The 1280''s are still great, great speakers and will blow most systems out of the water - but - the 1700''s are still slightly better in every aspect. Worth an extra $50? Yes, if you care a lot about sound quality. If you don''t you won''t notice any difference between the 2.

TWO SETS OF RCA INPUTS = CONVENIENT: I love that there''s two sets of RCA inputs. Meaning you can plugin your TV and your laptop simultaneously, and don''t have to worry about switching sources. (I.e., both are essentially plugged in, and it''s mixing the audio between the two sources. Whatever is playing, will just play!)

NO BLUETOOTH = OK: I was agonizing between these and the ones with bluetooth. After reading the reviews on the units with bluetooth, I decided not to go for bluetooth, which tends to be less reliable than wired connections. Plus, with Chromecast hooked up to a TV which outputs to these speakers, I can basically Chromecast to these speakers.

SUBWOOFER = OPTIONAL: The subwoofer out is super handy, because if you want a subwoofer down the road, it''s easy to add. But you don''t really need one. These are an improvement over the original model, because the frequency response extends lower down to 52Hz. I just tested with a tone generator, and it does indeed go down to 52Hz, and maybe a little bit below that. The volume does seem to dip starting at 110Hz on down, but there''s still pretty decent low-end until about 50Hz. So in my opinion, you only need a subwoofer with these speakers, if you really care about that rumbling theater sound.

Unbelievable value at $100.

I''ve been looking at buying these speakers for weeks now but have held off and I''m glad I did! This new version was just released and my understanding is that it''s an updated version of the normal R1280T. The difference here seems to be that this has a much better remote, better cables, and it has an output for adding a sub! These are currently the same price as the old version so definitely buy these over the normal one.

As for the sound, they are perfect. I am not an audio person of any kind but the bass sounds terrific, classical music sounds great, and watching shows on my tv works fine. I can even control the sound with my Roku TV remote, which is super convenient. Great buy!

I use them as near field monitors in my makeshift studio. The sound quality is excellent, especially for the price (which is why I bought another set). However, the subwoofer output is, as others have said, "strange." I assumed that since it was a subwoofer output it would be monaural. So I purchased a 3.5mm to RCA mono cable and connected it to the line level input of my Yamaha sub. Nothing. Nobody else seemed to mention "monaural" and the user manual just says "3.5mm" so I next tried a 3.5mm to RCA stereo cable. I tried connecting first the left and then the right channel to the line level input of my sub. Nothing and nothing. I began to wonder if the output was even live. I then read reviews here where I learned that it''s basically and full range headphone output - which doesn''t cut off the speakers when in use. So I plugged in a set of headphones and I got music. Okay. Next I tried using the speaker level inputs of the sub powered by the line going from the right Edifier speaker to the left one, and that worked. However, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a separate sub out if I still have to use the speaker level inputs on my sub. So my advice, skip the extra cost of the Ts and just go with the T model.

Updated 12-Feb-21:

I tried one more solution for connecting the sub out to the line input to my sub, namely a TRS Stereo Male to Mono RCA Female Adapter Jack which I purchased here on Amazon - and it worked! The description for this adapter claimed that it did a "summation" of the left and right channels. As this is a passive connector, I doubt that very much. As a reviewer of the same kind of adapter noted, it just "shorts" the tip and ring of the left and right channels. The effect of this would be the highest level between left and right at any given instant in time, not a summation. I didn''t try this solution initially because I didn''t like the idea of "shorting" the two channels, however it seems to have no ill effect on the Edifier speakers. Left and right channels probably use a transformer type isolation to protect the amp, but I''m speculating on this. Bottom line, it works just fine. Upgraded my review to 5 stars, but they should note this somewhere in the manual to spare folks the "pain" I endured.

I bought these speakers to use in a small recording studio setup for monitoring, mixdown, and general playback use. I usually mix with headphones, but like to have a decent set of speakers to check to make sure a typical stereo system is going to be able to reproduce the recording well. After breaking the speakers in for several hours, driving them with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 3rd gen, I''m finding them to be punching well above their weight- nice tight bass response without being flappy, good stereo image and crisp definition without being squawky in the mids, and plenty of power and air movement for a typical small room. I wouldn''t use them to DJ a party or anything like that, but for near field sitting at a desk or in a chair and listening to music, I''m really impressed. Having a remote, two inputs, volume and tone controls is a nice bonus. For those who complain about the controls being on the outboard side of the right hand speaker, I find they work fine if you just swap the speakers and the input leads left for right so the controls are inboard on the left speaker.

I''m really satisfied with my purchase of these speakers. For the price and the size, these pump out plenty of high quality sound. I bought these to spin mostly rock music on my turntable. For tiny little lunchbox speakers, they''re well-balanced. I can get a pretty good treble and bass with the built-in knows, and it doesn''t sound too muddled or shrill. The volume is pretty good too. They aren''t loud enough to throw a rager and drown out the sound if the cops banging on your door, but for just chillin around the house I never turn it up more than half way. Not needing a separate amp is a space-saver and it''s nice that there are two input channels -- I bought a Bluetooth dongle to hook up to Line 2 so I don''t have to worry about running out of batteries on my portable speakers. The only frustration is that you WILL need a phono preamp if you want to play vinyl at more than mouse-fart volume. I should have known that, but I didn''t think about it. So just wanted to pass that along. Overall I definitely think these speakers were worth the money.

Update after almost a year:
Dropping two stars as there’s still no remote profile available for Fire TV 4K, and the original remote is weak and only works if you’re pointing straight to the left speaker, which is a pain.

Original review:
These are good speakers for the money. Speakers look real nice, but they definitely won’t be the ones to shake your room, although the quality is decent. I paired them with a Klipsch subwoofer and was able to get satisfying results and as opposed to what I’ve read that they wouldn’t control the output volume to the subwoofer, I was surprised to see that they actually did. What could be better? It doesn’t work with the Fire TV remote, so you have to use two remotes. The remote feels really weak, so I’m afraid it could break at any moment (one more reason the FireTV remote integration would be nice). Unfortunately, none of the available Edifier profiles were compatible. Also, if you’re not using a subwoofer, be prepared to a not so punchy bass, which is to be expected due to the woofer size.

These are a great set of little speakers. I have set up a new office for myself and had some basic requirements for my speakers. They had to be powered, they had to be attractive, they had to sound nice, and they had to connect to each other with standard speaker cable! These speakers check all the boxes. I love the faux walnut finish. The mesh grille has a simple design, and the whole unit is very elegant looking. These are powered, so no need for an amp which is nice. They come with RCA cables, and RCA to 3.5mm, so you can easily hook these into a DAC/reciever or your motherboard. They also have a sub out port, so if I want some more bass later that''s an option. These are connected via regular old speaker wire. This was a big one for me, as I have them mounted about halfway up the wall in the corners. I can make a wire as long as I want since they are not hard hard wired together or use some proprietary cable. So my wire goes all the way down to the floor, along the molding, and up to the other speaker, nicely hidden in cable channel. Very nice. (Speaker wire and channel all bought on Amazon very inexpensively!) And as for the sound. They sound fantastic. They''re little, but so is my office, and they more than fill the space. Pleasantly surprised by the amount of bass they have without adding a woofer. I can crank them up louder than is comfortable for me, and I don''t hear any distortion. They have built in tone controls for bass, and treble, so you have a bit of control over the sound that way to tweak it just right. All in all, I love these speakers. Great sound for the price, attractive looks, and feature rich.

You absolutely can''t beat these speakers at their price point. They are crisp and clear while also delivering a very healthy amount of bass. The new ''s'' iteration of these have an improved remote that now turns them on and off without having to flip a switch every time. If you want a great set of speakers for your PC or to play music in a medium sized room these are amazing. I live in an apartment and these are the absolute perfect set of speakers for listening to music without annoying the neighbors with ungodly amounts of bass.
You absolutely can''t beat these speakers at their price point. They are crisp and clear while also delivering a very healthy amount of bass. I purchased this set to replace the built in speakers on my 7-in-1 record player (Phono, Bluetooth, Radio, Cassette, etc). These not only look great, but they sound great. They add nice clarity and bass. I was originally worried that these "Near Field Monitors" wouldn''t perform well in a large room, however they are exceeding expectations. Plenty of volume and depth. Full disclaimer- I''m not an audiophile. I can recognize bad sound from good sound, but not the finer details of high end equipment.

I bought these powered speakers to give my vinyl collection a rebirth without breaking the Covid-impacted bank! I swear by Bose speakers and headphones, so the competition for Edifier was definitely stiff. The reviews were accurate: great speaker for the money. Not as warm or bass-pronounced as possible but, once again, the price was great and the sound--in a small room, mind you--is great to my 54-yr old ears
