When I am not listening to soundtrack music, I''m usually enjoying music by Brian Eno, Robert Rich, Harold Budd, Patrick O''hearn, Robin Guthrie, Michael Stearns, or other artist from the old Windham Hill record label. I actually discovered Max Richter from listening to his soundtrack from the movie "The Last Days on Mars". I had never heard of the composer before, but I enjoyed his work from the movie and wanted to find out if he had worked on anything else. Well, he''s worked on quite a few things indeed. From movie scores to classical compositions, various interpretations of the classics, and some avant-garde work along the way, he has worked on quite an assortment of material. Some of his early work is pretty hard to acquire on CD, but I was intrigued by two of his releases. The first was the massive "Sleep" and the other was "The Blue Notebooks". After sampling both of these, I decided to pick them up. I was lucky to find the "Sleep" box set (8 CDs and a Blu Ray disc) and I have been enjoying that every night as a sleep aid and a ticket to dream land. "The Blue Notebooks" has been excellent for relaxing around the home and even calming the atmosphere in my office at work. Richter''s music is very mellow, soft, and easy to just drift off to. Consisting mostly of piano and strings, the music has a calming effect within it''s simplicity. Others have made comparisons to Michael Nyman and I would certainly agree. There are moments within "The Blue Notebooks" that is very reminiscent of Nyman''s "Gattaca" and "Piano" scores. This is not a bad thing however, it certainly is great music. The best pieces on this particular release for me would be the two variations of "On the Nature of Daylight", "Valdimir''s Blues", and "The Trees".

Ritcher also adds a unique touch to some of the music by incorporating narration on pieces like "The Blue Notebooks" and "Shadow Journal". Electronic instrumentation and sound effects can be found on a few pieces as well like "Arboretum". A really haunting piece is "Organum" performed with the sound of a pipe organ (not sure if it''s real or a keyboard...hard to tell these days). The narration bits on some of the pieces are a little weird but are short enough not to be annoying. It''s definitely an interesting CD and I''ve enjoyed listening and relaxing with it. The CD comes with an 8 page insert containing information about the composer, photos of the composer in the studio, and other releases through the record label which is the famed Deutsche Grammophon. The CD contains 12 tracks with a running time of 48 minutes. I recommend checking out his "Sleep" box set as well!

Didn’t sound good at all on my record player. I believe the record is warped for both of the records I received which was a huge disappointment after it took so long to receive them. I tried playing multiple records of mine to test and they sounded fantastic so definitely an issue with the ones I received. I have never ended On the Nature of Daylight early before, but it was unbearable to listen to. So sad.

Though the album is wrapped around a single melody, I still find myself enjoying the entire thing beginning to end. Great for background music, as a way to help focus your thoughts in a busy/noisy place, for making something boring more interesting without totally distracting you and, yes, best when you have time to just listen to it and focus on it, giving it the attention it deserves.
Highly recommended.

The Blue Notebooks is a beautiful album. It is melodic, classical, but also modern. Max Richter is a German-born composer who was raised in Britain and attended Edinburgh University and the Royal Academy of Music. Released in 2004, Richter claims that Blue Notebooks is a protest album about the Iraq War. The album lasts 40+ minutes and there are 12 tracks. The music combines piano, strings, and electronic sounds. There are two violins, two cellos, and a viola. Tilda Swinton briefly quotes from Kafka on five tracks.

The music is sparse and minimalistic. Richter was influenced by Philip Glass and Steve Reich growing up, courtesy of a milkman who would leave him albums to listen to. However, there is more to his music than imitation and repetition, Richter also writes nice melodies. He was also influenced by The Beatles and Bach. “On the Nature of Daylight,” appears twice and one version is performed by an entire string orchestra. The track was used in the recent sci-fi film “Arrival” and on "Shutter Island" by Martin Scorsese.

Max Richter is a German-born composer whose minimalist piano and intricately woven poetry makes contemporary classic composition accessible to a much more discriminating modern ear. The Blue Notebooks feature readings from Franz Kafka''s The Blue Octavo Notebooks and Czeslaw Milosz''s Hymn of the Pearl and Unattainable Earth. The result delivers a stunning post-classical familiarly haunting melodies, as well as straight to the point flawless execution. Side Note: check out Max''s collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous (The Future Sound of London) on The Isness. Favorite tracks: On the Nature of Daylight, Shadow Journal, and Written on the Sky. I came across "The Blue Notes" on Amazon and thought long and hard before deciding to purchase it. Am I glad I did, I think this is a beautiful album of haunting music a sort of cross over between Phillip Glass and Brian Eno. I absolutely love this and I will be listening to more of Mr Richter''s work.

Listened to it lots on Spotify before buying - worth having on CD for the better quality sound and to pay my way to the artist. I love it and plan to get From Sleep next. If you''ve not heard it, it''s beautiful orchestral melody - fairly simple repetitive melodies which evolve. Some may sound familiar as it''s made it''s way on to movie soundtracks and other places on TV. There are narrated sections in and around the music and sound effects which add to the atmosphere.
